Day 1: Mac and “Cheese”

Vegan \"Mac & Cheese\"
Vegan “Mac & Cheese”

You’ve really got to give it to my wife, she tried to make my first dinner as a vegan easy and serve me something that, historically, I’ve always liked. I love her for that… and I also kind of hate her for it.

I’m just going to come right out and say it…. nutritional yeast tastes nothing like cheese… NOTHING! STOP KIDDING YOURSELVES VEGANS. Let me put this plainly.

Nutritional yeast is to cheese as :
1. dump truck is to leopard
2. sunshine is to when she’s gone
3. Battlestar Galactica is to Battlestar Galactica

I hate all the animals. This is their fault for being so tasty.

I don’t know what nutritional yeast is, but this weekend we’ll take you out for some vegan chicken fried steak. You’ll be happy.

Dude, I give you nothing but props for giving this a try.

But in all seriousness, I don’t think you’re really a vegan. I mean, WTF are you going to put on your pizza?

Wait, don’t answer that. I really don’t want to know.

Have you ever told Mrs. Hesselbee about our trial and tribulations trying to feed you breakfast when you were a kid?

Roasted vegetables and pesto is delicious on pizza.

    He likes that.

Heidi just had an idea… you can eat Velveeta, right? Everyone KNOWS there’s no freaking milk in Velveeta. That should be totally vegan friendly. It’s all MAN-MADE! Unless you count man as an animal…

Right. Except the whole point is to have Dane eating FOOD. Not NOT food.

    He was already doing that.

    Bacon! Salty, crunchy-ish Bacon!

Strips of bacon! Bacon on a sandwich! Bacon in the noontime! Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!

    Beggin’ Strips!

Vegan mac and cheese is usually terrible. I’ve tried them all. They get better and better the more you forget about what cheese actually tastes like : ) I liked this one with lots of ritz crackers on top - http://yeahthatveganshit.blogspot.com/2007/10/creamiest-vegan-mac-n-cheez-ever.html
Not exactly healthy vegan eating, but ease into it, eh? Also, Teese vegan cheese is excellent on pizza. It actually melts, unlike other vegan cheese monstrosities. I wish you and your wife lots of luck! You’ll be scarfing down baked kale chips in no time!

Holy god this whole situation is frightening. You know like how we’ll know it’s endtimes because the holy land becomes a state, and the four horsemen and I think Jesus or Noah or Job or whatever wrote something in there about The Hesselbees becoming vegan.

I ate carnitas last night for dinner. And a margarita.

    Nels - Velveeta… yes… I must look into this.

Robert - Take your bacon elsewhere… We ride white shining horses here, and your strips of tasty death are not welcome (but you are).

kgib - Thanks for the tips! Teese cheese eh? I’ll give it a shot.

Melissa - The end is nigh.

Rhodey - I want Mexican food right now!

If you’re gonna start doing more pasta I recommend Barilla Plus. All other multi-grain pastas make me want to kill myself but this one is a really good mix and has 10 g of protein, 4 g of fiber. Rock.

I recently discovered that f you put hot pepper relish on everything you won’t miss cheese.

I’m trying to cut back on the stuff too so we’re sort of in this together-ish.

I’ll let you know if I discover anything else.

Holy cow. Just came across your website at the suggestion of a friend. I went vegetarian last week but have been trying to stick close to vegan foods as much as possible. And I agree: vegan cheese is NOT fun. I learned this last night when I tried to make grilled cheese. Yuck.
